Prince Hall Masons

Honoring the Legacy of Prince Hall Freemasonry: A Path Toward Brotherhood

Freemasonry is built on the pillars of brotherly love, relief, and truth—principles that transcend race, creed, and nationality. Yet, history reminds us that the journey toward true Masonic unity has not always been free of obstacles. For many years, African American men seeking Masonic Light were denied membership in mainstream lodges due to the societal norms of the time. In response, Prince Hall, a man of vision and resilience, sought and secured a legitimate charter in 1784, founding what would become Prince Hall Freemasonry. From that moment, generations of Black Masons carried forward the traditions of our Craft, upholding its highest virtues despite the challenges of segregation and exclusion.

While we cannot change the past, we can recognize it with humility and resolve. Today, mainstream and Prince Hall Masons increasingly walk the same path, not as separate entities, but as brothers—united by the same ancient landmarks and obligations that have guided us for centuries. We acknowledge the historical divisions, but we also celebrate the growing bonds of fellowship, respect, and collaboration between our lodges. Together, we move forward, demonstrating that Masonry’s greatest strength lies in its ability to build bridges where walls once stood.

As we continue to work alongside our Prince Hall brethren, we reaffirm that Freemasonry is, and always has been, a brotherhood of equals. By honoring the past and embracing the future, we illuminate the path toward a more unified and enriched Masonic tradition—one that truly embodies the values we all hold dear.
